History

The Plan

Faith Community Church (FCC) was born out of a love for God, thirst for community and a need to minister to God's children. The birth of our church was on March 20, 1998 when 25 friends gathered in prayerful community and formed a mission church. That night, Rev. Dr. Ardyth Kovacevich Johnson was called to be our founding Pastor. Our name, Faith Community Church, was chosen on April 3, 1998 followed by our first Sunday worship service on April 5, 1998.

Later, on June 6, 1998 Faith Community Church was incorporated in accordance with Section 501©(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and chartered the following day, with Rev. Dr. Johnson being installed. Our affiliation with the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, approved by the church membership on January 24, 1999, provides us an identity (Congregationalism) and a means to achieve our ministry goals. Furthermore, the congregation approved a Constitution (defining what we believe in) and Bylaws (defining how we are to operate).

Our first home was a small school owned and operated by Jubilee Christian Church, a non-denominational church in Franklin, WI. While the facilities had much to offer, a need for our own facility and identity is crucial for our future growth. Our organizational structure is made up of four executive board members and nine ministries. The nine ministries are Worship, Christian Education, Membership, Finance, Wellness, Music, Missions, Building and Registrar. As a new church, with a mission emphasis, we have devoted much of our time to the identification of future programs. Many of these programs were witnessed during our first year of existence.

The Land

Although Jubilee Christian Church was accommodating us, we started searching for an existing building. We were unsuccessful in finding another facility to meet our needs to provide more room and flexibility.building

In 1999 we concentrated in finding land to build our church. Several pieces were explored but none were just the right place. In the year 2000 after much searching we were able to secure an "Option to Purchase" for a 21 acre parcel of land on 76th St. south of Rawson Ave. in Franklin. We would have the task of rezoning the land from residential to institutional. We had many "hurdles to climb" with this process, i.e. changing the city master plan for the extension of an existin

g road, opposition by neighbors and city officials, etc. but our congregation was determined "this would be the land for our new home" it was perfect. An architect was hired to draw up a plan for building in phases.

We were turned down by the city Planning Commission; however, we persevered and went before the Common Council. There were many issues to resolve and this would be a long, frustrating process. The final "Option to Purchase" was granted in 2001.

In 2002 the Future Home of Faith Community Church sign was put up on the property. Fundraising projects were started to help with the building fund and a Construction Manager was hired. Vesper services were held monthly on the land – once a cornfield but "our cornfield" and we were determined to make our presence known in Franklin.

The congregation approved a Master Plan for the planting of a Meetinghouse on the church land and also approved Phase I which will house Faith Academy, a Christian based school for children six weeks old to twelve years of age. Mr. Norman Barrientos, was hired as the architect.

Due to the limited funds we will build in phases. The essentials will be done immediately, with expansion to allow for the implementation of new ministries as space and funding permits. The physical layout of our church has been designed to striking a balance between sufficient membership to financially sustain our desired programming and a membership too large to retain the close friendly atmosphere we currently enjoy. This has led

us to an optimal membership size of around 600 members. The result is a facility offering seating for 200-300 members per service.

In 2004 Magill Construction Company was hired as our general contractor. There were many mountains to climb before building could commence. The ground breaking ceremony was held on December 12, 2004, on a very cold, glooming, windy day with about 73 brave souls atten

ding. Each person took turns with a shovel to dig the frozen ground. God blessed us with "sunlight" as we prayed together. This is what we had all worked so hard for – this indeed was where God intended us to plant our church in Franklin, WI.

Construction began in April, 2005, and it was to be a very exciting year, watching our meetinghouse construction, going from a cornfield to our new church home. Vespers were held each week during the building process.steeple

A new city street to our land, to be named Faith Drive, was completed early in 2006.

We took occupancy on February 3, 2006 and our first Sunday service was held on February 2, 2006. The steeple was erected on March 5th. Faith Academy was licensed and opened on April 20, 2006.

There have been many challenges in the building process and the work of the church goes on. We give thanks to our congregation for their many gifts, their time and their talents. In 2008 Mark Carstenson, a local contractor, donated the building of a storage unit on the land.

The Ministry

Rev. Dr. Stu Merkel began as Acting Pastor in April 2009. A Search Committee was formed in January 2010 to begin the process of seeking a full time pastor.

On January 23rd 2011, at a Special Congregational Meeting, the congregation voted unanimously to call Rev. Dr. Stu Merkel as its next Senior Pastor. Our founding Pastor, Ardie Johnson, retired in early 2009, after serving 11 years.
